Throughout World War II, the United States conducted a variety of stealth experiments. These included arranging lights along the wing of a Consolidated B-24 so that it could be made to "disappear" in certain lighting conditions. The plane, of course, did not disappear from radar so this approach was dropped. Later, in the 1950s, the nearly all-wood Lockheed Vega was used as a stealth target for testing radar.
